Algestone acetophenide was discovered in 1958 and was introduced for medical use in the 1960s.It was not introduced in the United States, but it is marketed widely throughout Latin America.It was also previously available alone in Italy and as a combined injectable contraceptive in Portugal and Spain, but has been discontinued in these countries.

Algestone acetophenide(DHPA), also known more commonly as dihydroxyprogesterone acetophenide (DHPA). It is a progestin medication which is used in combination with an estrogen as a form of long-lasting injectable birth control.

Algestone acetophenide powder is a 16alpha,17alpha-dihydroxyprogesterone acetophenide. It has a role as an anti-inflammatory drug and a synthetic oral contraceptive.Kym, Algestone acetophenide powder is a synthetic progesterone that has been used in estrus synchronization and has been evaluated as an injectable contraceptive in combination with estradiol enanthate. It is also used therapeutically as a topical anti-inflammatory and is applied topically in the treatment of acne.
